Travelling to a medical appointment does not automatically mean that your journey is covered by Assurance Maladie, France's statutory health insurance system. Specific conditions apply, and your doctor determines the appropriate mode of transport based on your health and how independently you can travel.

01 · Medical prescription
When can a CPAM-approved taxi be prescribed?
CPAM-approved taxis are a form of professional seated medical transport, as are light medical vehicles (VSLs). A doctor may prescribe this type of transport based on the patient's health, including where there is:
A need for help getting around or completing certain formalities.
A need to follow hygiene requirements.
A risk of side effects during the journey.
Assurance Maladie may cover transport costs in various circumstances set out in the regulations, such as certain journeys relating to hospitalisation or treatment for a long-term condition, provided the relevant conditions are met.
Your doctor determines whether transport is medically justified and which mode of transport is appropriate.
02 · The steps involved
The medical prescription is usually issued before the journey
Medical prescription
A medical prescription for transport is normally required for cover. Except in emergencies covered by Assurance Maladie's rules, it must be issued before the journey takes place. The prescription specifies the mode of transport appropriate for the patient's health.
Prior authorisation, where required
In some circumstances, prior authorisation from Assurance Maladie is also required, including for certain long-distance journeys or series of journeys.

03 · The right vehicle
Why must the taxi be CPAM-approved?
A prescription for professional seated medical transport does not mean that a journey in any taxi is eligible for reimbursement.
For a taxi journey to qualify for reimbursement under Assurance Maladie's rules, the taxi must be CPAM-approved. Journeys in a taxi without this approval are not eligible for this reimbursement.
Your prescription and circumstances then determine the cover that applies. Depending on the case, costs may be reimbursed in part or in full, based on the agreed rates.

04 · Shared transport
Shared transport: a rule to be aware of
You may be offered shared transport if your health allows it and your prescription does not state a medical reason why it would be unsuitable.
If your health requires you to travel individually, this must be assessed medically and, where justified, noted on your prescription.
For certain regular, scheduled treatments, refusing an offer of shared transport when no medical contraindication is stated means losing access to direct billing: you must pay the costs upfront and then claim reimbursement. This measure does not apply to beneficiaries of Complémentaire santé solidaire or AME.
